Passkeys and backup codes

Signing in

Choose Sign in and use a passkey. Your browser offers the ones it can reach, including a passkey on your phone if you scan the code it shows.

Adding more passkeys

Add a passkey for each device you use in Settings → Account. You can rename them there so you know which is which. Synced passkeys, like ones saved to iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, follow you to your other devices.

You can remove a passkey you no longer use, but not your last one.

Signing in with a backup code

If you've lost every device with a passkey on it, choose Use a backup code on the sign-in page. Enter your username and one of your 10 codes. Capitals and dashes don't matter.

Each code works once. Once you're in, add a new passkey straight away.

Whenever a backup code is used, we put a message in your inbox saying when, which browser it was, and how many codes you have left. Devices with notifications on get one too. If it wasn't you, sign in, remove any passkey you don't recognise, choose Sign out of every other device, then Make new codes, all in Settings → Account.

Making new codes

Choose Make new codes in Settings → Account if you've used most of yours or think someone else has seen them. The new set replaces the old one, and the old codes stop working at once.

Lost a device?

Sign in somewhere else, then remove the lost device's passkey in Settings → Account. You can also choose Sign out of every other device there.
