An alias is an extra email address that delivers to your inbox. Give each company its own, and you'll always know who an email came through.

## Making an alias

Choose **New alias** and fill in:

- **Name**: what you'll call it, like "Tunebox".
- **Given to**: the company's website, like `tunebox.com`. This is who's expected to write to it.

You'll get an address like `tunebox.k7f2wq@yellowbird.email`. The six characters at the end make it hard to guess. You can also use the shorter `ybrd.me` domain. Pick your default in **Settings → Aliases**.

Free accounts can have 10 active aliases. Blocked aliases don't count.

## Custom aliases

On the paid plan you can also make up to 10 custom aliases, where you pick the whole name before the @ yourself. Make one in **Settings → Aliases**: type the name, choose the domain and select **Create**.

Names are 3 to 30 lowercase letters, digits and single dots. Some names are reserved, and each name can only belong to one person.

A custom alias isn't given to any one company, so it takes mail from anyone, straight to your inbox. It never [leaks](/help/leaks), and it can't be blocked or replaced. You can rename or delete it like any other alias. Deleting it is permanent: nobody can use that address again, including you.

## Renaming an alias

Change an alias's name on its page, or choose **Rename** from its menu in the list. Only you see the name. The address stays the same.

## Reading alias mail

Mail to an alias goes straight to your inbox, tagged with the alias it came through. It's never [screened](/help/screening): the alias already tells you who it should be from.

## Replying from an alias

Replies go out from the alias the email came to, so the company only sees the address they already have. When you write a new email, choose which address it's from.

Each alias has its own **Name on mail you send**. Leave it empty to send without a name. It can have its own signature too. See [Sending mail](/help/sending-mail#signatures).

## Exporting your aliases

Download all your aliases as a spreadsheet (CSV) from **Settings → Account**. See [Exporting and deleting your data](/help/exporting-and-deleting).
